I now began to find that all my long and painful lectures upon temperance, simplicity, and contentment, were entirely disregarded. The distinctions lately paid us by our betters awaked that pride which I had laid asleep, but not removed. Our windows again, as formerly, were filled with washes for the neck and face. The sun was dreaded as an enemy to the skin without doors, and the fire as a spoiler of the complexion within. My wife observed, that rising too early would hurt her daughters' eyes, that working after dinner would redden their noses, and she convinced me that the hands never looked so white as when they did nothing.
Sitten kartanonherra alkaa vierailla kirkkoherran perheen luona, eikä hänen kiinnostuksensa perheen vanhempaan tyttäreen jää keneltäkään peittoon. Nämä vierailut ajavat lopulta köyhän perheen vieläkin ahtaammalle niin, että romaani alkaa muistuttaa Jobin tarinaa.

Oliver Goldsmithin romaani The Vicar of Wakefield (1766) on sentimentaalinen satiiri.

  2. En itsekään romaanista muista enää paljoa, mutta siihen viittaillaan ahkerasti muissa, myöhemmissä romaaneissa. Jane Austenin Emmassa Mr. Martinin lukeneisuudesta tehdään johtopäätöksiä:

"Oh yes!—that is, no—I do not know—but I believe he has read a good deal—but not what you would think any thing of. He reads the Agricultural Reports, and some other books that lay in one of the window seats—but he reads all them to himself. But sometimes of an evening, before we went to cards, he would read something aloud out of the Elegant Extracts, very entertaining. And I know he has read the Vicar of Wakefield. He never read the Romance of the Forest, nor The Children of the Abbey. He had never heard of such books before I mentioned them, but he is determined to get them now as soon as ever he can."

Mary Shelleyn Frankensteinissa viitataan tarpeettomaan oppineisuuteen:

I believe I left him incredulous to the last, for his constant answer to my unwearied entreaties was the same as that of the Dutch schoolmaster in The Vicar of Wakefield: 'I have ten thousand florins a year without Greek, I eat heartily without Greek.

From that blessed little room, Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, Humphrey Clinker, Tom Jones, the Vicar of Wakefield, Don Quixote, Gil Blas, and Robinson Crusoe, came out, a glorious host, to keep me company.

George Eliotin Middlemarch, jota en ole myöskään lukenut, viittaa Wakefieldin kirkkoherraan.

"No, really, Mrs. Farebrother, I am glad of both, I fear," said Mary, cleverly getting rid of one rebellious tear. "I have a dreadfully secular mind. I never liked any clergyman except the Vicar of Wakefield and Mr. Farebrother."
